GIUSEPPE began when I received a call from Zachary Bennet and Karen Nourse in New York City. They were putting together a film documentary on motorcycling and, specifically, Giuseppe Guzzi, an engineer for the Moto Guzzi factory who in 1928 decided to ride from his home in Mandello del Lario in Italy to Lapland, in northern Norway -- a very long trip on the relatively primitive motorcycles of his day. They had seen a GUZZI LeMANS mini-comic I'd done years ago, and wanted permission to use some of its art in their film.

I must say, I got caught up in their enthusiasm and offered to do an eight-page mini comic featuring Giuseppe. The story was easy, as in one of our first conversations they related to me an actual event of the trip that they thought was a neat moment -- after crossing a field, Giuseppe finds he is unable to continue. Having no choice, he turns around, having already gone miles out of his way.
